Maintaining Your Barber Chair

Your barber chair is the biggest and most important investment in your station. It’s a workhorse that sees action all day, every day. A little regular maintenance will go a long way in protecting that investment, keeping it looking sharp, and ensuring it functions smoothly for years. Here are some simple, expert tips to keep your chair in top condition.

Daily Cleaning: Vinyl and Chrome Care

A clean chair is the first thing a client notices. Make it a habit to give your chair a quick wipe-down at the end of each day, or even between clients.

  • Wipe It Down: Use a soft cloth with warm, soapy water or a vinyl-safe cleaner to wipe away hair clippings, product residue, and oils. High-grade vinyl is tough, but harsh chemicals can cause it to crack or fade over time, so avoid abrasive cleaners.
  • Mind the Gaps: Use a small brush or comb to clear out hair that gets stuck in the seams and crevices. This not only looks better but prevents buildup.
  • Polish the Chrome: A quick polish of the chrome base and footrest with a soft, dry cloth will keep it shining and looking professional.

Hydraulic Pump Health

The hydraulic pump is the heart of your chair. If it fails, your chair is out of commission. Luckily, taking care of it is simple.

  • Smooth Pumping: When raising the chair, use smooth, full pumps rather than short, jerky ones. This is easier on the internal seals.
  • Watch for Leaks: Occasionally check the floor around the base for any oil drips. While a little bit of oil on the pump shaft itself is normal lubrication, active leaking means a seal is failing.
  • The Sinking Feeling: If your chair slowly sinks after you've pumped it up, the hydraulic seals are likely worn out. At this point, the most effective solution is to replace the hydraulic base unit. It's a straightforward fix that can give your chair a whole new life.

Quick Mechanical Check-ups

Every few months, take five minutes to give your chair a quick inspection. Check that the bolts on the armrests, footrest, and base are tight. If you notice any squeaking in the reclining or swivel mechanisms, a small amount of lubricant like silicone spray can work wonders. A little preventative care ensures your chair remains sturdy, silent, and safe.
